Vila Real - The capital of the Tras - os- Mantes area, Vila Real is a lively, little town built on a hilly plateau in the foothills of the Serra do Marao. Bridges across the ravine link some parts of the city together.
Vila Real was once a royal town and its historical core makes for an interesting walk around the many formerly aristocratic houses dating between the 16th and 18th Centuries and then enjoy a glass of port along the Avenida Carvalho Araujo, its main street. |

Parque Nacional do Alvao - This is the most scenic area around the Tros-os-Mantes, with its waterfalls, flower-filled valleys and ravines, which makes for a pleasant drive on the outskirts of Vila Real.
Capela Nova - Built in the 18th Century, it is one of the finest Baroque monuments in Portugal, with its Italian architecture and fine floral facade.
Igreja Sao Pedro ( St Peter's Church) - Built in 1528, it has an intriguing interior, much baroque gilt carving and a chancel adorned with colourful tiles. Its main attraction is a coffered ceiling of carved and glided wood.
Solar de Mateus - Grapes of the original Mateus rose wine are grown here in the vineyards. The manor house has been called the most typical and fantastic country home in Portugal and is a perfect example of baroque architecture with a stunning balustraded staircase and high emblazoned pediment.
Casa de Diago Cao - The birthplace of the navigator who discovered the Congo river in 1482, it was altered to the 16th Century renaissance style. Little is known about the man, as the King of the day ordered all records of his discoveries to be concealed to keep the knowledge from his enemies, but in 1755 an earthquake destroyed the archives where the materials were kept. |

St Peter's Fair - Held on the 28-29 June, it offers the visitor an opportunity to buy the region's fine black pottery, made in the surrounding countryside.
Dia de Finados- (All Soul's day) - Held in November, the locals spend the day with those departed. Flowers are laid at family graves, cemetaries are spruced up and special masses and processions are held. |
