| Coimbra, like anywhere else in Potugal is so much more fun if you have your own car. Do remember that driving in Portugal virtually means having eyes in the back of your head as well. It is no wonder that Coimbra is known as the romantic city of Portugal, as it is scattered with beautiful gardens an a gorgeous landscape. The city is also home to a vast selection of medieval churches, popular cafe's and noisy bars.
It is also home to the university which was established in Coimbra in 1537. It became the main source of education for many country's leaders, including Dr. Antonio Salazar who was a famous dictator from 1932 to 1968. |

Serra de Estrela National Park - The park has become the most popular places of tranquility and rest. It is also the biggest national park throughout Portugal.
Convento de Santa Clara-a-Nova - The convent was constructed in 1677 and is known for its beautiful Baroque interior and stunning Renaissance cloister.
Igreja e Mosteiro da Santa Cruz - The monastery was constructed in the late 12th century and features a very Romanesque feel. Some of the particular highlights are the pulpit, the choir stalls and the beautiful 13th-century cloister.
Quinta das Lagrimas - The beautiful garden which dated back to the 18th century, was once a topic of art by the famous poet Camoes, who spoke of it as The Garden of Tears. It features a stunning fountain, which is known as the Fonte dos Amores.
Portugal dos Pequenitos - Without a doubt the most popular attraction in Coimbra. It features miniature models of houses and landmarks in the city. |
