Almada Overview |
Almada is situated on the bank of the River Tagus. It features the most amazing views of the Lisbon area. Located on the top of the hill, is the statue of Christ the King, which was built in 1959, this has become one of Almada's most significant trademarks.
Alamada boasts a very healthy nightlife, offering visitors a large variety of places to visit, such as restaurants, cafe's and a wonderful selection of bars and clubs. |

Almada Essentials |
Convento dos Capuchos - The convent was built in the 16th century. It was almost entirely destroyed during the earthquake of 1755 and was reconstructed during the 18th century. A particular highlight of the visit is the beautiful views of Costa da Caparica.
Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso - The church was originally constructed during the 16th century, however it was reconstructed during the 18th century and contains a Baroque-style architecture.
Castle of Almada - The castle was built in 1384 and was destroyed during a Castillian attack. It was reconstructed during the 18th century and is surrounded by magnificent gardens.
Church of the Mercy - The church is housed in the building which was formerly the Hospital of Almada. The church was almost completely destroyed in 1755 due to an earthquake and was later reconstructed.
Church of Sant'iago - This is the oldest church in Almada, also the first one ever built, and is one of the most historical sites of the town. |

Festival de Teatro de Almada - The local festival of theatre is held annually during the month of June.
Independence Day - Celebrated by means of a public holiday on the 1st of December. The day commemorates the restoration of independence from Spain in 1640. |
